When I was in college (a particularly nerdy college that I won't disclose) I had a lot of friends who were into these shows. Some of them bought DVDs and watched them at their apartments when I was around, but a ton of them I couldn't get into.
- Is it the outrageous hair colors and big eyes that turned me off visually? - Is it the giant robots? - Is it the inane shouting back and forth without ever fighting? - Is it the giant swords that apparently Japanese men feel that they have to compensate themselves with? - Is it the fireball throwing that really is only cool in video games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter? - Is it the 'humor' that really makes me wonder what the fuck makes what they say and do supposed to be funny? (lost in translation, again)
I've pretty much decided that it's ALL of the above.
However, that's only when they're applicable.
During my years in college and through continued friendships, I did run across a few shows that I could actually "get into": 1) Ghost in the Shell (movies and series) - Apparently the source material that the creators of 'The Matrix' (the first and only 'good' one) used. Special Ops, hacking, violence, and deep philosophical roots. Good stuff. 2) Hellsing - Simply badass to every extreme. Excessive violence, foul language, and sex helps drive an intense supernatural storyline. 3) Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Translated loosely as 'When The Cicadas Cry'. The most bizarre, horrific, and completely engrossing show I think I've ever watched. A complete psychotic experience that, despite its deceptively 'childish-look' is NOT FOR CHILDREN. 4) Deathnote - The one anime I actually herald as a genuine 'Masterpiece'. Amazing story, great character development, and an intense game of 'Cat and Mouse'. This one can't be missed.
The few animes I listed above actually have deep character development and excellent stories to tell, and most of them are also action-packed and entertaining as hell to watch. However, because of all the reasons I don't like the majority of anime, finding a good one is like digging through a mound of shit to find a quarter: You just don't bother until someone says, "LOOK!"
And even then you're hesitant... you listed good one's but you can't class all of the animes your old roomates watched as representing all there is to watch. I think there are good shows you would like based on your tastes above. You like horror and action so try a few of these Trinity Blade Blood+ Original Hellsing not Ultimate Black Lagoon you will love it! Cowboy Bebop Naruto Let me know what you think. You have a nice website

I'm definately not watching Neutero. But, I'll check out a few episodes of Black Lagoon. If it has killer fish-men creatures that spawn from the Black Lagoon, it'll rock. I'm trusting your judgment

So I watched the first two episodes of Black Lagoon, and I'll admit it's pretty good so far. More down to earth with the modern-day piracy and smuggling story, and some pretty violent gunfights. I'll watch it a little longer.
Thanks Onoe.
Right now I'm re-watching all the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni episodes (2 seasons). Goddamn, as horribly cute and stupid the artwork is, the story is amazing, very dark, and disturbing. I guess deception is the key to the series.
Five school friends (ages 9-15ish) play games after school and do what kids that age do. HOWEVER, each one of them has some sort of sordid past. One is physically/sexually abused, another has violent episodic moodswings based on her thinking she's being stalked by a demon, another lost the love of her life and blames her family/twin sister for his disappearance, etc.
So the story revolves around a town festival, but then something happens and it triggers one of the kid's traumatic pasts, and they end up turning into paranoid psychopaths. The results are equally as tragic as their overwhelming paranoia results in death and madness. After the climax of each unique story, the entire scenario resets itself, and another kid becomes "the star" which the next few episodes revolve around.
Clues are given during these episodes so the viewer has to play detective and discover what is causing the outbreaks of madness. Is it supernatural, or is it all being manipulated?
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni ("When the Cicadas Cry") has some of the deepest storytelling and best character development I've ever experienced in a story, as well as some of the most unnerving and truly disturbing moments I've ever seen in any movie/tv show/anime.
Great show and I recommend it to anyone.

Hey
Glad you like it Laughingman. Naruto is more of an ''acquired taste'' so you are not hurting my feelings by not wanting to watch it.
That anime you are talking about sounds really interesting. Where can I find it, is it on DVD or do i have to find a good sub/dub?
