I would disagree JTHM. if you have listened to or viewed anything that has left a bad experience over and over you will end up not liking it and for the most part not giving it a chance. I would guess the same thing happened here and for the most part I agree with him. there are a LOT of crappy Anime out there and by stating it; it gives the chance for others to say: "hey wait! take a look at this. . .".
I can hardly name a decent Anime that is widely watched over here and this thread has delivered some that I need to give a chance to. it has also showed me some to stay the hell away from.

Excellent summation Zimes. JTHM everyone has their own opinions (and I razz Laughing Man on his opinion of anime all the time ) but I can see his point of view. There are a lot of anime that definitely don't conform to western tastes and with the success of Pokemon and the other Saturday Morning garbage it is easy to see that his complaints have some validity. If all that I was exposed to was Pokemon and the like I would have my prejudices too. After all most prejudices (though never always true) are shaped by experience. And Zimes hit the bullseye when he said that this thread has mentioned a hand full of animes that deserve a chance to be seen. I personally had never heard of Higurashi until I read this thread and it was a brilliantly done anime, and I have Laughing Man to thank for that. I have even recommended one or two animes that I thought Laughing Man and every one else would like, including Interstellar 5555 by Daft Punk. Changing people's minds through persuasion and producing exceptions to a prejudice is the only way to defeat that prejudice.

You make a good case but I still think that Laughingman cannot make a case that he hates all anime when he says he does like four of them. That is like saying you hate Ford motor company except for the Mustang, the Explorer and, the F-350 Truck. But I am reading through the forum topic and it sounds like people are changing Laughingman's mind so that's good. I am guessing that the "I hate anime" is just a flame bait title to draw attention from people like me but in reality it was just used to point out Laughingman's four favorite Animes? Anyways this is a cool forum you guys have. I will favorite it and visit here more often. I might even contribute a few Animes you should watch.

ATTENTION!
I have a very public announcement to make.
I will only make it once.
I concede.
ONOE has done it.
Congratulations, ONOE, you have found an Anime that I actually enjoyed watching. Mission accomplished.
I had my doubts, but your review pretty much told me to take this movie light-heartedly and enjoy the ride; and for what it was the ride was indeed enjoyable. So I found a copy of it while I was pirate- er, 'legally obtaining digital copies' of movies and decided to give it a spin over the weekend.
I've listened to Daft Punk a few years back ('Bigger, Harder, Stronger, Faster') and liked their music style so I gave this video an honest chance to impress me. it did. The story was... out there, but it was a great rock opera. Probably the one of the best things about 5555 was the fact that all you ever really heard was the music; no talking what so ever, and very little for sound effects made it feel like a 90 minute music video (not a bad thing at all in comparison to Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (minus the 'Smooth Criminal' scene)).
I also didn't really figure out what you meant by 'dreamlike' in your review until I watched the movie, but you were right, the video was very fluid and surreal.
Hands down the best thing about Interstella 5555 was that the video was timed PERFECTLY with the music. You can catch a glimpse of it in that youtube video ONOE included in his posted review.
Not my favorite movie, but it was good. Damned good.
To ONOE: If you gloat, I'll ban you... joking.... maybe... haha.

Anyways this is a cool forum you guys have. I will favorite it and visit here more often. I might even contribute a few Animes you should watch. The comparison is really more like "I hate all the Chinese restaurants in town, EXCEPT for this little-known place that is authentic and delicious." If the number of dislikes is vastly unproportionate to the number of likes, you can put the vast majority into a whole of dislikes, but you can still have exceptions to the rule, which is what I did. I'm not an anime fan. Not at all really. A lot of it is just so far 'out there' that I can't get into it. Some of the shows my college friends watched were like Voltron, Dragonball Z, Naruto, Inuyasha (sp?), etc. Mostly the 'main stream' shows that included the Adult Swim lineup, which is probably picking from the bottom of the barrel. I did have a professor (and so did Zimes, I believe) that said that there were great animes, but they never got released in America. I can believe it. And because I'm not exposed to these 'Great Animes', my impression is founded on the kid-friendly crap we do get. But I reiterate, there are now some animes I do like (Hellsing Ultimate, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (Kai and Rei), Death Note, Ghost in the Shell (fuck yeah), and now Interstellar 5555 by Daft Punk. I am also looking up an old animated show I watched as a kid, Samurai Jack, but I don't know if it counts as anime since it's an American series (USA! USA!) But Zimes summed it up nicely: zimes wrote: If you have listened to or viewed anything that has left a bad experience over and over you will end up not liking it and for the most part not giving it a chance. I would guess the same thing happened here and for the most part I agree with him. there are a LOT of crappy Anime out there and by stating it; it gives the chance for others to say: "hey wait! take a look at this. . .".

I dunno, I can never trust something where people of all genders look like women. Like Alucard in Hellsing. The one person I can always depend on for some amazing anime is the legend himself, Miyazaki. I took my girlfriend to see "Ponyo," and we both loved it! "Spirited Away" is also a masterpiece, and I can really say he fails to disappoint!
