Read it for yourself kids. Apparently George Lucus has stated that he is going to retire from films... Read the article

I dont know how to feel about this... I guess it seems kinda bitter sweet to me. I mean he has had his hands in alot of films but of course he is known best for the Star Wars franchise. Just seems weird for him to leave...

No, I think it's better that he retire.

Why do you feel that way?

I'm a not Star Wars fan. The only Star Wars related thing I liked was Genndy Tartakovsky's Star Wars: Clone Wars 2003 mini-series. I really love THX 1138 and American Graffiti. My thoughts on George Lucus retiring? I got nothing. :| He made his career as a film producer. Not a film director. He only directed six movies and that's it!

...Are you for real? The endless re-releases of the original Star Wars trilogy, the prequels, Indiana Jones 4 (the aliens were his idea, according to Spielberg) — it's about time they're taking that fat bastard away to the loony bin, if you ask me.

George LUCAS. There's an A in his name.

And as important as George Lucas has been to film making he's a sell out to toy companies and merchandising. Gary Kurtz the producer and second-unit director of the first two Star Wars movies was very vocal about George Lucas selling out Lucasfilm before Return of the Jedi was wrapped up.

Quote:
I could see where things were headed. The toy business began to drive the [Lucasfilm] empire. It’s a shame. They make three times as much on toys as they do on films. It’s natural to make decisions that protect the toy business, but that’s not the best thing for making quality films. The first film and ‘Empire’ were about story and character, but I could see that George’s priorities were changing.

The emphasis on the toys, it’s like the cart driving the horse. If it wasn’t for that the films would be done for their own merits. The creative team wouldn’t be looking over their shoulder all the time.

Quote:
Kurtz then spoke about how much he hated there being a second Death Star; how it was just too similar to the first movie. And how his vision for the trilogy’s end would have seen the rebel forces defeated, Han Solo killed in the middle of the movie, Princess Leia trying to figure out how to handle her new responsibilities as queen, and Luke Skywalker walking away alone and against the wind like Clint Eastwood. Huge changes that would have made for interesting third chapter, and alas, the point where Lucas and Kurtz decided to part ways, which actor Mark Hamill then compared to “mom and dad getting a divorce.”

I changed the title of the thread so we don't look TOO illiterate.

Still, wasn't it also someone else who wrote the screenplays for Empire and Jedi, and not Lucas himself?

Let's not forget that while George Lucas did most of the story for the original Star Wars movie, he a) had many elements changed since he had less power, so people could fix his horrible ideas (like C3PO being a cars salesman-type), b) he couldn't direct worth a damn (as is evident with the deleted extra scene from Episode IV that has Han Solo walking and talking with Jabba the Hutt, which is the same kind of shit he populated episodes 1-3 with when everybody just walked/sat and talked for most of the movies), and c) he did not direct or write the better installments, Empire and Return. You know what came after that? Howard the Duck, the Star Wars prequels and the litany of additions to the old Star Wars movies. Not to mention that he also came up with the bad ideas in the Indiana Jones movies that, before Crystal Skull, didn't make the cut... like making The Last Crusade a haunted house story... or an Indiana Jones movie that had a little alien sidekick.

He should stick to being a producer, and stick to not having a voice in the creative process. Otherwise, he wouldn't have helped produce movies like The Land Before Time.
