I don't know if you fellas've heard or not, but a couple of days ago Hollywood lost one of its greatest and most charismatic actors — Peter Falk. Mind you, usually I don't care for these needless Internet tributes and laments, but goddamnit, it's Columbo!

LOS ANGELES (AFP) – Peter Falk, the gravel-voiced US actor who played rumpled TV detective Columbo, has died aged 83, his family said.

Falk, whose portrayal of the disheveled, raincoat-wearing homicide detective made him a household name around the world and earned him several Emmy awards, died Thursday at his home.

"Peter Falk, 83 year-old Academy Award nominee and star of television series Columbo, died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home in the evening of June 23, 2011," said a statement issued by a family lawyer.

The cause of death was not given, but the actor had suffered from Alzheimer's in recent years, and his wife Shera was appointed to look after his affairs in 2009.

Falk had an impressive movie career including 1974's "A Woman Under the Influence," Wim Wenders's classic "Wings of Desire" in 1987 and "The Princess Bride" in the same year.
But it was as Columbo that he will be most remembered.

"Columbo" started as a TV movie in 1968 and was later made into a weekly series, in 1971. It quickly rose in the ratings to become one of the most popular shows on television, and won four Emmy awards over the years.

He played Lieutenant Columbo, a seemingly slow-witted Los Angeles detective who invariably succeeded in nabbing the criminal just minutes before the closing credits.
"Just one more thing," Columbo would say, resuming his questioning of the prime suspect who had been certain until that moment that he had failed to arouse the investigator's suspicion.

Part of Falk's loveable schtick as Columbo was the ever-present cigar that dangled from his fingers and his wrinkled raincoat, worn regardless of the weather, plucked from Falk's own bedroom closet.

Born in New York City on September 16, 1927, Falk was diagnosed at the age of three with cancer of the eye, he wrote in his 2006 book "Just One More Thing" -- named after his Columbo catchphrase.

After surgeons removed his right eye, Falk was fitted with a glass eye, which did not stop him from becoming a star athlete and being elected class president at school.
He even learned early in life to play his disability for laughs -- during a high school baseball game, Falk wrote, the umpire called him out at third base when he was certain he was safe.

"In front of everyone, I whipped out my eye and handed it to the umpire, (saying) 'You'll do better with this one.' Talk about getting a laugh. I got a roar. Even the guys on the other team were rolling in the grass," he wrote.

After high school, Falk joined the merchant marine and went to sea as a cook, but then went to college to study public administration.

He tried to get a job working for the CIA, but his membership in a labor union while a seaman -- seen as having the taint of possible communist affiliation -- torpedoed Falk's chances of getting work as a government spy.

Falk later found employment at the post office, and then as a bureaucrat with the Connecticut state government, doing a bit of regional theater and taking acting classes on the side.

Then in 1956, at the age of 29, he abruptly quit his day job and decided to move back to New York, declaring himself an actor.
The gamble paid off. Falk found quick on-stage success in a 1956 off-Broadway production of "The Iceman Cometh," playing opposite legendary actor Jason Robards.
But Hollywood was not so hospitable at first. A movie talent scout reportedly had wanted to recruit Falk, but the actor was rejected by the head of a major movie studio.

Undaunted, Falk moved in 1960 to Hollywood, where he received an Oscar nomination for his first role, in "Murder, Inc." He garnered another nomination for his second big screen role, in the 1961 film "Pocketful of Miracles."
Falk is survived by his wife of 34 years Shera and two daughters from a previous marriage.

See, this is why I hate being so young: Most of my favorite actors, directors, composers and whatnot (e.g., Clint Eastwood, Ennio Morricone, Jack Nicholson, Sean Connery, Morgan Freeman, and etc.) are no longer young, and when one of them tragically passes away, you're left wondering if there will ever be anyone as talented as them to take their place...

I know this isn't the kind of topic you'd usually expect to see on CCS, but you've got to agree, the man deserves some respect. Rest in peace, Peter! Your magnificent talent will never be forgotten!

I agree. He was fantastic in Robin and the 7 hoods and of course perfect as Max in the Great Race.

I think you raise a good point about hollywood talent. When these great actors are gone, what are we left with? Crap actors like Adam Sandler, Shia Labeouf, and a bunch of bimbos with big lips and no talent, that's what. =/

My point exactly! Hell, even those actors whom we (well, you at least, 'cos at that time I wasn't intelligent enough to tie my own shoelaces ) used to call the "young echelon" only ten-fifteen years ago (i.e., Johnny Depp, Jim Carrey, Uma Turman, Michael J. Fox, Brad Pitt, and etc.) are now in their 40s or even 50s!

So, my question is: If the aforementioned actors are talented enough to at least continue the legacy of those who already passed away, who's gonna come after them? Untalented overrated sluts like Megan Fox or obnoxious twats who can't act for shit like Shia LaButtfuck? I don't think so...

RIP Peter.

while I agree there are talentless hacks with most the actors and actresses that I can think of there is some hope with people like Russle Crowe, Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Jessica Beil, and Robert DeNerro (I want to include these guys too but I have seen them in very few roles, still promising though with people like: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Nathan Fillion and Christina Hindricks)

Indeed, great examples, my friend! Unfortunately, neither one of them can really be called "young" (they are gifted and compelling, thought, I'll give them that), 'cos if we take the, say, 35-65 age group, there's quite a formidable amount of talented actors and actresses to be had, such as Clive Owen, Willem Dafoe (personally, I just love that guy! :D), Garry Oldman, Denzel Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Tom Hanks, Robert Downey Jr., and so on and so forth. It's the younger generation I'm worried about!

Thought I will admit that there are some promising talents like James Franco, Jesse Eisenberg, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and etc.; unfortunately, they are few compared to all those overrated young hacks that Hollywood keeps shoving into every single major release (i.e., Sam Worthington, Michelle Rodriguez, Megan Fox, and etc.)

As for Fillion, Hendricks, or any other talented TV actor — I'm afraid that if some big named Hollywood producer doesn't decide that this or that actor is definitely better than what ever talentless pretty-face slacker the studio is trying to shoehorn into his film; thus, busting their career (like in Quinto's case), I'm afraid that that's exactly what they are going to remain — TV actors.

Then again, seeing how such iconic characters like Malcolm Reynold or — let's not beat around the bush — Columbo will always, always be remembered a lot more than, say, any character Jason Statham (or whoever is now Hollywood #1 action-hero puppet) has ever played, maybe that's for the best! ;)

well if you can count Serenity to be a movie then Fillion got it but Hendricks recently played in a film with Kathrine Heigl and Josh Duhamel (two promising actors at least) in "Life as we know it" (yes its a chick flick, and yes my wife made me watch it).

Well, yes — of course, there's always "Serenity", but it had all of the original cast of the show 'cos, you know, it was based on the show. Then again, I remember Hugh Laurie started getting more roles in mainstream Hollywood flicks (Street Kings, Monsters vs. Aliens) after the rise of popularity of House; plus, the aforementioned Kathrine Heigl owes her current fame to Grey's Anatomy (I know, 'cos my mom's a fan, that's how I know :shy:), so, yeah, there's still hope! ;)

Besides, has anyone else noticed the new fad of hiring popular film actors to play the lead in some high-profile TV Show (e.g., Hugh Laurie and "House", Tim Roth and "Lie to Me", Jim Belushi and "The Defenders", and so on)?
