Ugh, hipster. Almost as bad as being called a hippie. Which is another label I was often given once upon a time. What often drives these labels whether or not you fit other criteria? Music
Now, hippies. I been around real hippies. They are essentially modern gypsies. They are often homeless drifters that do actually smell bad, and do too many drugs. Some of them can be really good people that only want to live their art and not participate in society. I can dig that.
Now, hipsters. They often smell too, just getting that out there, lol. I don't feel the need to rant about how they look and the idea of thrift store hipsters versus corporate hipsters. It's all pretty boring.
But here I am, a year away from turning thirty and I am often labelled a hipster. Last I checked I'm a married homeowner that loves his big screen tv and self-built computer. I use deodorant, I like starbucks, and I hate tight jeans. So what makes people ask me if I'm a hipster? My music. Which is also insane because despite the fact that I love so much indie rock, my tastes go far beyond that.
My favorite band in the world is Wilco, they have one of the best live shows you can see, and a song catalog to back it up. I can go from Wilco, to Dimmu Borgir, to Bob Dylan, to Yes, and then top it off with mutha-fuckin Miles Davis.
Of course Miles Davis was born about forty minutes from my home and the lead singer of Wilco was born about FOUR minutes from my home. Maybe that makes me biased.
So what's my point? I don't know, I just wanted to talk about music, labels, music labels (never got around to that one), and my interests.
I guess if I had point to this it would be that the wider your tastes in everything it seems to make life better. Food, movies, games, books, art. A single minded interest tends to make for a single minded person.
So let's try some new music today people! Who's the first to make a suggestion?? FEED ME!

Well, on one hand, I can sort of sympathize with you since right now, being in my early adulthood, I run across lots of people who consider themselves to be mature, open-minded, knowledgeable, tolerant, and, most importantly, intelligent, yet the qualities and standards by which they judge a person are just outright juvenile (i.e., his favorite films, bands, the way he dresses or speaks — that kind of stuff). It's also interesting to note that white, just like in your case, those fuckers are quick to call everyone who's different from them a hipster or a poser, in reality they themselves are nothing more than greedy materialistic swine who only care about their style and the place they occupy in society.
Also, isn't a hipster by definition a person who's into someone just 'cos it's 'artsy' or 'alternative'? So, tell me, how does liking different kinds of music (including the well-known, popular stuff like Bob Dylan) make you a hipster, especially if you don't dress up like a complete fag (pardon my French) or spout incoherent leftard crap at the slightest provocation?
In other words, just ignore that crap. I mean, hell, people've called me all sorts of stuff just for wearing classic, eternally stylish clothes like shirts, blazers, and fedoras, instead of an ugly Quote T-Shirt, ruptures jeans, and a 'gangsta'-style baseball cap, but lord knows I couldn't care less about those assclowns...

Tropher J you're eclectic not a hipster. I'm eclectic too and what I listen to is just defined by my mood. I'll listen to death metal one minute and I come down from an adrenaline high with something like Leonard Cohen or Phil Collins. To me, there's two music genres to me: Good music and Bad music.
If you want some good 'eclectic' stuff check out the bands: UNKLE, Cage the Elephant, Rammstein, KMFDM, Gorillaz, and definitely check out Two Steps From Hell's album "Invincible", but just never drive listening to it.
So how did you get called a hipster? Did you just tell someone who you had on your mp3 player or something?

Amen to that. The hypocrisy in certain 'mature' and 'progressive' people is so thick you can cut it with a knife.

You don't happen to be affiliated with a "family" that dabbles in certain "businesses", would you? Or did your 1940's Ford Sedan hit 88 miles per hour and send you to the year 2010?
I know, I know, "fuck off, LM". I'm just giving you crap.

Yeah... Topher J, you said that people have called you a hipster based on your music preferences, right? However, doesn't that mean that the said people should be familiar with you and your tastes — people like your friends, family, colleagues, etc. If not, then how did these people get access to your iPhone?

First of all, call me crazy, but good ol' Sinatra does look rather stylish in that picture, if you ask me! (Yeah, I know I'm not helping my case...)
Second, I didn't say I dress up exactly like a 1940's mobster, I just said that I prefer to wear stuff that was, is, and always will be stylish, unlike the kind of stuff that the 'cool' kids wear these days. Furthermore, if anything, my usual, every day attire is similar to that of Doctor House:

@CineMax: I was just joking. LOL. But yeah, if you look like House M.D. then that's a cool look. Just lose a cane unless it's for a leg that's gone necro or it's concealing a sword.

@CineMax: Then that makes the first episode out of X-many Seasons worth 2 shits. Seriously, watched the first three seasons and EVERY EPISODE is:
Patient collapses and gets sent to hospital House: "You're all stupid, the disease is X" Doctors try to cure patient, patient reacts negatively to treatment House: "You're all stupid, the disease is Y" Doctors try to cure patient, patient reacts negatively to treatment House: "You're all stupid, the disease is Z" Doctors cure patient. House is still lovable asshole.

First of all, I love how this thread drove to the center of watdafug Island. Seriously
@Cinemax Well, simply put it's partially that I sometimes can't shut my yap about people's music, especially when I'm working a 12hr night shift and I have to hear pop-country. That then get's turned back to me. Sometimes the hipster thing is kind of a joke, more of a friendly jab. I've also been in situations where hipster's get brought up with people who already know my music interests (used to work a sales gig where we played music a lot) The group almost approached it like a farcical intervention. "Dude, don't you realize ur kind of a hipster?" "Yeah man, I think everyone knows but you" Hehe.
Of course, people in the American Mid-West kind of depend on social labels. It's not how I roll, and for many I don't even think its a derogatory thing. They just have to categorize things while living in their personal anus-office. If that makes sense.
