It is just another stupid trend to try to make video game characters darker and edgier than before because its what's popular. They tried to do the same thing with Sonic the Hedgehog by making Shadow the Hedgehog and it bit Sega's ass.

Pretty soon we'll see a darker Mario but he isn't a Plumber he is in the Mafia who kills Goombas and flushes their body parts down drains. He will have sunglasses and a black jacket and his fireflower will be the machine gun from Scarface and he will eat mushrooms to get high so he can't feel pain when he shoots up the casino of the mob boss who double crossed him, Antonio "King Bowser" Koopa.

I would have guessed that Mario would have been a loan shark. All of those gold coins got stolen and then he goes out for payback.
