Final Fantasy XIII is a bad game

So are all of these negative opinions just based on what you have all heard or what you actually think?

If the game plays itself like FF12 then I am out. A game that plays itself is just virtual masturbation. Bring back the turn by turn game play so that you actually get to use strategies in your fights and not have your characters charge at the enemy like a bot in Unreal Tournament and get its head blown off because you can't control it.

Ok, I've been playing FFXIII for the last couple days since my PC has been on the Fritz, and this is what I'll input.

Visually

Absofuckinglotly Amazing! The Cut scene graphics are as good as they can get, smooth, well rendered and big screen quality (keep in mind i play this on a 44inch 880 series samsung @120Hz motion plus). go from the cut scene to the action scene and the graphics aren't scaled back all that much so detail is still incredible, the movements of the characters are amazing.

Characters:

The main focus is on Lightening, the other characters are supporting roles and it roates through all of them as the group leader to develop their characters, Which I personally appreciate.

Story line,

The first few hours of the game are spent building on the plot, they spend alot of tiem on it, and if you have no patients then yes, you will hate it but if you enjoy an actual story then you will adore the effort they put into this.

Game Play and Char progression.

yes so far it is linier (I'm only about 13 hours into it so far). Its not like the older FF games where you can run around and find fights in an area that allow you to level up to ungodly perportions and one hit the bosses like i used to do in FFIII, VII and VIII. I think this is to force you to use the new battle system. No their are not levels, what you get is a system that is almost a merge of several of the games to progress. With each battle you gain CP which you put towards a cystrarium (sp?) this determines abilities and attributes.

BAttle system

Ok this battle system is interesting, intutive but very interesting none the less. To say it requires no strategy and you just attact relentlessly is naive and unfounded. You only play and control the group leader at the time, the others characters act indepently and make their own choices, but they take a posture baised on the Paradigm that you have set up. You can change posters of characters in game very quickly, to do a series of tasks, you can set up that all attack either physical or magical depending on role. You set them up as 2 attackers, 1 healer, 1 debuffer or 1 attacker, 1 buffer, 1 debuffer, 1 healer. sometimes your group is only 2 deep so you can't have that many set up at once and have to switch between a few different ones to defeat certian enemies.

You build chains on monsters, when and if you can do this your attacks get a bonus and do more damage, and in some cases the only way to defeat the monster is to build the chain, failing to do so will lead you do die. Yes if the main character dies, then it is game over, it is more of a challenge not a pain.

ha maybe, but that is assuming i beat the game anytime soon, or at least get far enough into it to make more of a review. Time is always my issue.

A good review of Final Fantasy 13 would be a fun addition to this site even if it is not a complete review. Zimes has written some reviews of his initial impressions so there should be no reason why you could not do the same. Of course in the case of the game the Last Remnant the review was terminated before the ending because Zimes hated it too much to finish.

I have heard a lot of bad things about Final Fantasy 13 being very linear and not as traditional as most and that is too bad. I long for the days when Final Fantasy will return to the Knights and Mages of the early games and of the 9th in the series. I hope that some additional information will spark my interest.

Thanks for the overview of Final Fantasy XIII chuckysin, too bad I'm so deep in debt with my house project that I probably won't be able to play it until FFXIV (14) comes out. I do want to check it out so maybe I'll try to rent it one of these nights.

I am currently playing Final Fantasy XIII and to be honest the good outweighs the bad by far. Don't listen to the criticisms, go and play it.

Damn, it's been about a year, and now someone needs to say it: Final Fantasy XIII DOES SUCK.

I bought it cheap so I feel better about my purchase, but I'm about 6 hours into Final Fantasy XIII and here's what it comprised of:
- 70% cutscenes
- 20% double-tapping the 'x' button which spams out the 'auto command' feature and makes the gameplay so simple that even a quadriplegic could do it.
- 10% running straight.

Compared to all of the previous games (except maybe FFXII) this Final Fantasy game involves very little strategy, and if you thought that Final Fantasy X and XII had annoying characters, HO HO HO, you're in for a shock:
- Stoic emo chicks ust sit quietly and moody like most girls do when a guy does something wrong and they give him the silent treatment. WOW a Final Fantasy character that can't possibly annoy me by talking!!! *GASP*
- An overly energetic hero-wannabe who seems to kill more people than he saves, but he never lets that fact dampen his smile
- a little boy who looks like a girl, and has PUSSY tattooed across his crybaby face
- an airheaded girl who would spend all day chasing colorful butterflies like a hippie that smoked herself retarded

You know, the typical Final Fantasy character roster... Except that they also throw in a token-black character who shoots enemies "gangsta-style" and whose 70's-style Afro is a nest for a chocobo chick.

So I'm 6 hours into the game and I just realized that I have NO FUCKING CLUE what is going on with the story. They literally throw you into the middle of a world without explaining anything for a whole 6 hours. People are being rounded up and exterminated like it was 1930's Poland, and no one knows why. Even worse is that I have no clue what the majority of the characters' motivations are as of yet.

I have zero motivation to keep going on. Some people may say that the game gets better, but if this is the hill I have to climb, I'll say "fuck it" and go play somewhere else...

HOWEVER there is news that Square-Enix is making Final Fantasy XIII-2, and unlike Final Fantasy X-2, XIII-2 is supposed to be a darker, grittier game that is basically an apology from Square for making what is (so far) an expensive piece of shit.

Hrm.... I'll keep playing when I get home, just because I already wasted 6 hours of my life, and if i waste another 34, maybe I'll have something to show for it instead of writhing on my death bed, and my one regret was not finishing a Final Fantasy game. *GROAN*

A year late indeed But I am surprised that Square would make a sequel to one of their worst games. It would be similar to making FFX-III. Why haven't they been harder at work making Final Fantasy XIII Versus instead of trying to salvage Final Fantasy XIII?
