I found my Sega Genesis and my old Sega CD last night and I was replaying some of my favorite games as a young man. There were great games that never got to be popular and I want to post them here.

The Haunting on Sega Genesis is like Beetlejuice the game where you are a mischievous ghost who is trying to scare the corporate tycoon who killed you and his family out of all of their houses. It is a comedy game where you can possess objects in the house to scare the people away. Like when a family member is next to a closet, you go inside and make the closet open with a skeleton inside or you make an oozy hand come out of the kitchen sink.

Beyond Oasis on the Sega Genesis is like the Sega version of the Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past. It has an Arabian Knights theme where you have a magical gauntlet and you need to use elements like water and fire to defeat an evil being. It is a really good adventure game if you like Zelda games.

Popful Mail on Sega CD is a typical platformer game that is really addictive to play. There are animated videos that are really fun to watch and the story is good from what I remember.

Road Avenger on Sega CD is an interactive motion video game where you basically watch a movie and you press the right direction on your controller or else you crash your car. It is simple but it is very good because it has an 80s cartoon look like G.I. Joe and Transformers, and it is like the Mad Max movies.

Dracula Unleashed on Sega CD is a point and click detective mystery that I never beat because it is very challenging. It takes place after the book Dracula and you have to talk to the characters like Dr. Van Helsing and the Harkers to get clues on where you need to visit next and what items you need to equip or else you will die. There is a lot of cheesy Full Motion Video with bad actors but the game play is still good.

What are your favorite games that were never as popular as they should be?

The 7UP game "Cool Spot" on the Super Nintendo was badass platforming action. Way better than other product games that were really lame like Chester Cheetah Cheetos game.

And E.V.O. Search for Eden.
I saw a friend playing that on his laptop in school once and he gave me a copy. It is really neat because you start out as a fish and you evolve into a stronger fish and finally into a reptile and you keep evolving until you are the supreme life form on the planet.

Does THE X FILES for the Playstation count? It is another point and click game but it has full motion acting by the X Files actors so it is really like playing an episode of the tv show.

I had a soft spot for Lego Racers when I was a lot younger.

But, I would give the top title to the DOS game "Crystal Caves." It's a game I loved when I was younger and it's still mighty addictive today, yet about 98% of the world seems to not have heard of it.

Goof Troop on the SNES  It is a game based off of the Disney cartoon starring Goofy and his son Max. It is a really good two player game where you solve puzzles and fight pirates.

Hands down one of the best platforming action games of all times is Demon’s Crest.

According to rumor, this game actually generated NEGATIVE sales during the Christmas season, but for anyone who’s actually played it, Demon’s Crest is a very deep platformer that EXCEEDS the Mega Man X series.

You play as the gargoyle Firebrand (popular red demon from the Ghosts n’ Goblins franchise), who was once the ruler of the demonic netherworld, but has since been stripped of his power by Falanx, a rival demon. Firebrand once held six gems, or ‘crests’ that contained magical elements (earth, fire, wind, water, heaven, etc). The crests were scattered to the far corners of the netherworld and Firebrand was believed to be dead.

You play through very rich and detailed worlds that consist of graveyards, towering ruins, cathedrals, dark forests, and the typical ‘demonic’ locale, searching for not only the crests, but also for magical talismans that enhance your own abilities.

The crests themselves change your attributes (ex: the Air Crest gives you more range to fly, Water Crest makes you more agile in water, Heaven Crest makes you more badass than before), thus enabling you to proceed deeper within each of the 7 or so levels (each with 2 different paths to take depending on your inventory).

The enemies you fight are not the standard werewolf, vampire, zombie crap that most games like this normally exploit, but instead you get a very wide array of nightmarish creatures like a giant mantis, machete-handed giants, undead dragons, blobs made of rotting corpses, and impressive demons.

The graphics are some of the best on in the 16-bit era, with lots of colors, layering, and detailed sprite characters. A lot of love also went into the music and sound effects, with levels having their own distinct sound to them.

Hands down, this is one of the most underrated games in Super Nintendo history. If you are a fan of Mega Man-like platformers, and if you can get your hands on a copy, pick it up. Otherwise, I suggest that you try emulation to ensure that you don’t miss out on this fantastic game.

Boogerman! Hey I remember that game. You drink milk to spit loogies at your enemies and toilets are your warpzones. It was the lowbrow humor that all kids loved and all parents hated.
