The answer is almost inevitable when you ask someone why they bought the Wii: "for the multiplayer," or something to that effect. They sure as hell didn't buy the thing for the software. Therefore, the Wii is always hyped as being the choice for social gaming gatherings of any kind, especially family-oriented.
...why? Just because everyone can wave an electronic wand around? Should we completely ignore the multimedia capabilities of the PlayStation 3? Here's just one example (and yes, I'm well aware that its entirely anecdotal): I just got back from a fairly large Memorial Day party that quite literally ran all weekend - ranging from languorous lapses to staccato bursts - and with a PS3 on the premises, the entertainment really didn't end from a video perspective. Not only could everyone sit and play any number of games, ranging from Guitar Hero to Killzone 2, but they could also peruse the PlayStation Store. Hell, the girls were downloading TV episodes and renting movies while the guys had several Blu-Ray flicks that, obviously, aren't exactly playable on the Wii. And oh yeah, there were games that included motion sensing, too - Rag Doll Kung-Fu, anyone? - so what exactly were we missing by not having the Wii?
As much as I applaud Nintendo for producing an electronics item that really caters to the non-gamers worldwide, this whole fallacy that the PS3 (and the Xbox 360) aren't as "good" for social gatherings and parties has to die. With the multimedia options on the two true next-gen systems, it's a no-brainer. People were uploading pics, setting playlists, downloading new demos, hopping on the still FREE Network, and in general, doing whatever they wanted. The PS3 wore many hats this past weekend, and besides some intricate wand-waving, it did everything the Wii could do plus a whole lot more. As I was driving home, I figured Nintendo should probably clarify that the Wii is best for social groups of a younger age demographic, while adults who party may be more inclined to give something like the PS3 or the 360 a chance. At this point, there's very little the PS3 can't do, and the capabilities will only increase in number and quality over time.
I watched one girl spend a solid hour decorating a space in Home. That just doesn't happen on the Wii. I'm sorry, but as time goes on, I'm finding more and more reasons to discount the Wii in my brain. So sue me. As I always say, I just calls 'em as I sees 'em.
Later m8s!
"Yay! Flamewar, flamewar! Blood blood blood!!"
Luckily, we encourage it
I actually agree with the 'gimmick' comment. Believe me, I would have forked out the money to pick up a Wii, but when it came out there were no games I wanted for it... and there still isn't. A couple games like 'Super Smash Bros' and 'MadWorld' look good, but it's not enough worth buying a whole console for.
I just saw more potential in the PS3 and Xbox 360. The Xbox has a community of gamers and (earlier on) had all of the exclusives like 'Mass Effect' and 'Gears of War'. Now the PS3 is a multimedia powerhouse, and is the center of my home theater. The PS3 has the most exclusives that I wanted to play (Uncharted,
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots,
LittleBigPlanet,
Valkyria Chronicles, Ninja Gaiden Sigma [never played the Xbox version but again with the 'buy a console for 1 game' situation]) plus the major blockbusters (GTAIV, Bioshock,
Dead Space, Resident Evil 5, etc).
Yeah, everyone still bitches about the price point, even if the cheap version of the console (40GB model) is still $399, the same as an Xbox 360 Elite. But what I got bonus with my PS3 over the 360 was wireless internet and hi-def movies, as well as the EVER ESSENTIAL (GET THIS PART THROUGH YOUR FUCKING HEADS, SONY!) "Playstation 2 Backwards Compatibility" (I got the launch 60GB model

).
There is also a ton of bitching about the six-axis and how it sucks. Most of these conversations target the abysmal game 'Lair', but never make mention of games like 'Folklore', 'Warhawk', or even 'Rag Doll Kung Foo' which make GREAT and INNOVATIVE use of the six-axis without feeling 'gimmicky'. If you want to talk 'gimmicks' play "Mortal Kombat: Armageddon" on the Wii and tell me that the motion controls weren't forced into the game at gunpoint by Nintendo.
You're also spot on with the 'party game' mentality. I've never played 'Sing Star' but 'BUZZ' is probably one of the best party games, ever. I'm not much of a 'Rock Band' or 'Guitar Hero' fan because the notion of teens thinking they are rock stars by tapping buttons on a plastic controller is .... just retarded.
Still lacking with the PS3 is a solid online community, but FPS fans should take note of 'Resistance 2' and 'Killzone 2', which both have critically acclaimed online multiplayer modes that go outside of 'deathmatch' and 'capture the flag'. Also the fact that online gaming is still completely free, whereas I used to pay to get game demos and play online against foul-mouthed morons.
Not saying that Sony hasn't totally embarrassed themselves with online features, like HOME...All in all, I can honestly say that I honestly enjoy my PS3 more than my Xbox 360. Mostly because I think online gaming sucks because of all the 11 year-olds screaming obscenities into my ear-piece, and that I'm not getting anything more than a game console for the money.
Will I get a Wii? Maybe when Nintendo decides to grow up a little. I can't stomach much more Mario Party, Mario Kart, Mario Olympics, Mario Pro Bass Fishing, Mario Tentacle Hentai, Animal Crossing, or the other lame "Jap-Crap" that is literally WATER-BOARDING American-gamers. Seriously, shoving lame games down our throats IS TORTURE.
A Wii Zelda game would be the deal-maker for me purchasing a Wii, but until then I'll be more than comfortable with my PS3.
Laughingman and Ritos make very ballsy claims. i am not saying it is not true but the Wii has a very large cult following between gamers who own xboxes and playstations. There are not many people I know who do not have a Wii. A post like this is garanteed to make people angry because it is something fashionable. It is like making fun of a new trend and it will only single you out.
The Wii may be more expensive feature for feature but not every body needs four controllers or internet. At my cousins house the wii is a big social toy because everybody can use it easy and the games are not complex. We played WiiSports all night Christmas day with our families. Playstation and Xbox games are too complex with their 10 buttons and two control sticks on each but the Wii mostly just uses motion to do things like swing or pass balls in a game.
I have not played games like Buzz and they might be cool but you dont hear about Playstations being put into homes for the elderly to help them stay active. When grandma and grandpa can play a game easily with children you know you have a special and very social product.
I still love my other game systems but the Wii is a better party system because at least every one can party!
