TINY TOONS VID
@STAR, KennyFarino, Zimes, and CineMax: You'll have to forgive me if a paraphrase a lot of what I told STAR because Vaulting is falling into the same 'trap'.
Quote:
I love written reviews over video reviews. I really do. They're shorter, direct to the point, and while you can still toss out a joke or a funny picture, they're usually incorporated better than video reviews because they often reinforce the point you're making, rather than detract from it.

If humor isn't your thing, then simply don't attempt it.
In my college business courses I learned advertising 101 and the first thing that any successful advertiser says is that you have ONLY about 15-30 seconds to 'hook' an audience before they decide to keep watching or to turn whatever you made off. That means that you have 15 seconds to convey the purpose of your show to the audience. GameJams plays the music/video instantly; Mockbuster Mockery and Beyond Pictures get right to the point, the Dirty DoGooders shows a quick "Previously on" flashback (ala "Dexter") and the less said about the fuckaround series DVR the better. LOL, I joke (sort of) but DVR gives you the premise of the show in the opening video, though it's admittedly far from perfect and is currently going through QC.
But in the first 30 seconds of your video I've only heard your alarm and seen you unconvincingly fall out of bed (seriously, real comedy would require that you take the full fall and get physically hurt instead of tippy-toe off the bed, lower yourself down so you don't get hurt, and then do the Oliver Hardy fingerdrum). In the next 30 seconds, you've then flipped through your calendar and said "Summer is over". At the first 30 second mark, I was ready to hang it up if I hadn't promised to watch and give my thoughts, because I have yet to be 'hooked' by anything, but have only been given a 'gag'. Even skipping the bed scene and just saying "summer's over" would have made me think "yeah, it is isn't it... what's your point?"
Hook #1.
If you had a short anecdote about Tiny Toons being the perfect Summer movie of your childhood, I'd think "I remember that, it's was a favorite summer themed movie when I was a kid."
Hook #2.
Your analysis of the series is actually in the right direction of a true review of the series (ex: dissecting the opossums eating Babs and Buster and the G-rated sexual tension, etc), but it's sooooooo looooooooong and a lot of the information is unnecessary and borders on spoilers. Personally, I don't want a MST3K scene-by-scene commentary, I'd rather have a 10 minute highlight of why I should go back and watch something, or avoid it at all costs, rather than to have the entire movie explained to me so I no longer need to watch it for myself. But considering that your usual episodes last 40 minutes, 20 minutes is still way better, but still too long to be a quick, enjoyable video that doesn't overstay its welcome.
Korger sent me a link of your tv cohost's youtube page and it was a 30 second review of a movie that I don't care about, with 15 of the 30 seconds dedicated to batman and robin dolls having anal sex. And I thought DVR had some terribly offensive jokes and poor-taste... As much as I love offensive humor, I hate retarded offensive humor.
And luckily I finished my glass of Captain Morgan's and Coke that I was too numb to really go off on the entire Sith lightning bolts gag at the end making me want to physically GAG. Again, if humor isn't your thing, then simply don't attempt it.
You're probably asking "What about CineMax and the visual 'gags' in his video reviews" and I'll point to my quote at the top of this email and say: "CineMax's visual comedy REINFORCES his points and his own snarky comedy, it's not a crutch that makes the jokes for him."
As brash as I'm saying all of this right now, it's best that you hear it now, make corrections, and then churn out something fresh and interesting, rather than another basement dwelling nerd explaining the same clips they just showed you in their video. CineMax was brought on board because I saw not only humor that made me laugh like a hyena in an asylum, but he was reviewing more than just the plot of the videos play-by-play like everyone else, and was interjecting his well-crafted, intelligent opinions into the mix. If you can just get over the 'GAG' humor, and keep it tighter and to the point, you'll have a quicker, more concise video that gets to the point and is genuinely funny or more informative.
Here's the 'key' we gave STAR in an easy to understand format:
TGWTG method = Essentially watching the movie with commentary and using quick throw away gags that detract from your opinion for the sake of 'comedy'.
CCS method = Formulating an opinion, using elements of the movie to back up your opinion, and writing jokes that reinforce your opinion. Mockbuster Mockery is our best example with our new podcast video being pretty close but still rough.
