Killer Instinct (aka 'ULTRA')
After I created the theme 'Valhalla', I took a huge hiatus from GameEx. I was burned out and completely unmotivated, despite the fact that I was still getting requests to make another theme. People would offer to PayPal me money if I made a custom theme for them (which I was too tired and stupid to take), while others wanted to see something new and fresh. Still, I was burned out.
Until one day I got a request to do a Killer Instinct theme. Why did this 'click' with me? Because it was the arcade game Killer Instinct that seeded my downward spiral into emulation. KI brought about KI2, which brought about Mortal Kombat, which brought about Street Fighter, which brought about downloading every NES and SNES game ever made...
Now I'm sitting here with over 4000 games on my computer, and I only play four of them: Ninja Gaiden (NES), Castlevania X (SNES), Killer Instinct (Arcade), and Contra Hard Corps (Sega Genesis).
Anyways, Killer Instinct was probably my boldest and finest design work to date. I wanted something radically different than the usual 'boxed look', so after nearly 3 weeks of brain storming I came up with the odds and ends (literally). I wanted a really 'Blood and Metal' feel to help represent the game, and I think I pulled it off pretty nicely. I also wanted the menu screen to look kind of like a revved up character select box.
Featured characters include all characters and designs from both Killer Instinct and Killer Instinct 2.
Even more enticing was that this theme includes a flattened Photoshop file with the KI font and interchangeable KI characters so you can mix and match at your own free will. You could even add images of Mario, Sonic, Link, and Pikachu and make a bad-ass Super Smash Bros theme. The cherry on the cake was the inclusion of the KI1 and KI2 intro videos that play when GameEx is started up.
