Part 6 - Devil May Cry Anime Series

Devil May Cry Anime Review

This is LaughingMan. I am going a little outside of my realm because apparently there is a Devil May Cry anime...

And both ONOE and I will be teaming up and reviewing it for this Devil May Cry Anime Series Review.

ONOE, most of you lurkers know, is our resident anime-head and self-proclaimed 'otaku', so I asked if he would help give a less biased review to counter my own.

As for my share of the review, I honestly don't know what to tell all of you. Which way will our reviews swing? Read below.

ONOE's Devil May Cry Anime Review

devil-may-cry-anime-logo.jpg

Laughing Man sent me an email a short while ago, asking me if I had the pleasure of watching the Devil May Cry anime. Laughing Man currently has a running Devil May Cry series review (which is as extensive and thorough as it is a very funny and witty review).

I've only ever played Devil May Cry 4 on my Xbox 360 so I'm not that well versed in the mythology of the games, but I do get the basic gist.

The show was produced by the Devil May Cry anime studio Madhouse and was directed by Shin Itagaki. Bingo Morihashi, one of the writers for the second, third and fourth games, was also on the writing staff. The series debuted on WOWOW television network on June 14, 2007 and ran for 12 episodes. American rights were transferred to Funimation Entertainment in 2008.

The theme is apparently about a man-demon named Dante who is a demon slayer for hire. He operates a small business, ironically named 'Devil May Cry', with an older gentleman named Morrison who acts as Dante's agent and business partner. A consistent theme through the Devil May Cry anime is that a client approaches Morrison with a personal dilemma, Morrison introduces the client to Dante, and Dante reluctantly takes the job but ends up genuinely wanting to help whomever is in trouble.

devil-may-cry-anime-morrison.jpg
Morrison, Dante's agent. He's cooler without Patty's stuffed animals...

The first episode of the Devil May Cry anime develops this concept as Dante must be a bodyguard to a little girl named Patty Rowell, an orphan girl who is destined to inherit a fortune if she can appear at her family member's mansion by a specific date. It isn't that easy, as one of the three potential heirs is summoning demons to attack her. After the episode we seemingly wave goodbye to Patty, however the inheritance is actually a scam and Patty wants to stay with her bodyguard Dante, thus making her a permanent character in the series. However, Patty's purpose in the anime is quickly reduced to being the medium used to explain situations to the audience, usually Morrison explaining the setup for each episodes plot to Patty.

devil-may-cry-anime-patty.jpg
Patty, the orphan who lives with Dante.

Also included in the series are the returning female leads, Lady and Trish.

devil-may-cry-anime-lady.jpg

Lady is a demon hunter, like Dante, who has an extremely large arsenal of military projectiles and is usually riding a motorcycle. She dresses in a fetish school girl outfit accessorized by ammunition packs across her belt. Lady has a very aggressive personality, and is always commenting that Dane 'owes her money' or has some debt to pay off - exactly what that debt is, it's never explained.

devil-may-cry-anime-trish.jpg

Trish, who appears later in the series, is much more calm and collected like Dante, however she seems to be more of an intelligence gatherer and rumor chaser than an actual devil hunter. A sorceress of sorts, Trish has all of the acrobatic abilities of Dante and other demons, but she can cast thunderbolts from her hands. In the episode where Trish is finally introduced, she crosses swords with Lady, who not knowing who Trish is, believes her to be a demon and the main antagonist of the episode. Besides trading some fights with one another, the two also compete with each other on a more stereotypically feminine level, illustrated by their trying to out-fashion one another in a clothing store. Later in a fight against the real antagonist, Dante casually introduces Trish to Lady and they battle side by side.

Another reoccurring character is the mysterious Sid, a hunchback-like 'minor demon' who is less of an antagonist and more of a consistent nuisance to Dante and the others. Often appearing like a lackey to the antagonists of each episode, Sid seems to have some other agenda which rears its head in the final two episodes. Sid is very meager, and never fights directly against Dante until the end, however he does provoke Dante into accomplishing a few tasks for his own personal gain.

The animation, like nearly all of Madhouse's work, is high quality. The lighting effects and the action sequences are great for a short-run series. While motion is noticeably more fluent than any other anime, the backdrops and the individual characters are fairly detailed. Scenes like the opening credits and the motorcycle races of "Highway Star" are very impressive. One con is that demons always seem to have a 'foil' look: the shiny texture like on special edition trading cards. Also, the majority of the demons feel relatively uninspired, but for as long as they usually last in an episode, you don't have time to knock them. However each of the antagonist demons are as two-dimensional as a paper plate, and outside of 'KILL DANTE!' they have the combined personality of a wet carrot.

The voice acting for the Japanese version (the only version I have seen as of yet) is pretty good. Dante is voiced by Toshiyuki Morikawa, renowned Japanese voice actor whose credits include Bleach, Black Lagoon, Naruto, and, most noticeably, as the Japanese voice actor of Sephiroth in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children and the Final Fantasy video games. Trish is voiced by Atsuko Tanaka, infamous for her outstanding work in the Ghost in the Shell series as Major Motoko Kusanagi. Lady is voiced by Fumiko Orikasa, whose work off the top of my head is most noticeably the voice of Seras Victoria in the original Hellsing series and OVAs.

The music varies, but is pretty consistent in terms of quality. The opening theme, "D.M.C" is not as strong as "Time Has Come" from the Devil May Cry 4 soundtrack, but successfully sets the tone of the Devil May Cry anime, and is one of the few title themes that is pleasurable for both Eastern and Western audiences, unlike most J-Pop opening themes that Funimation changes into corny rap songs or metal rifts. The ending track, "I'll Be Your Home", is a lot more solemn, and the animation of Dante, brooding alone over a glass of whisky is a shockingly and depressing melancholy ending to an episode.

Disappointingly, the individual episodes are just that: individual episodes. Save for reoccurring characters and the accumulating main plot involving Sid, every episode is stand alone without any tie-ins from one to another. Due to each episode being around 20 minutes long each, they are so tightly condensed that it's underdeveloped at times. Though a few episodes do a good job at explaining a decent story, a lot of them are not nearly as flushed out as they should be in terms of plot and character development.

The action sequences... are mediocre. Sad to say it, the action is far between, usually involving only one fight at the end of each episode that lasts about thirty seconds. A usual fight starts with a demon saying he will kill Dante, and then it takes a few swipes before Dante either blasts it away in a hailstorm of bullets, or cuts it in half with his enormous broadsword. Originating from one of the biggest action games in history, it's a disenchanting downturn.

devil-may-cry-anime-end.jpg

My final verdict is that Devil May Cry will only appeal to the hardcore Devil May Cry fans, and few others. The plot is fairly ambiguous for those new to the series, and veterans would probably rather play the fast-paced games than watch what is, more or less, a Devil May Cry soap opera in comparison. Still, the series isn't the worst I've ever seen, and I wouldn't even say it is bad; it's just not what people would expect.

An episode breakdown is as follows:

1. "Devil May Cry" - Dante must protect Patty as she journeys to inherit a fortune.
2. "Highway Star" - Lady and Dante participate in motorcycle street races to defeat the demon Red Eye.
3. "Not Love" - A wealthy man hires Dante to kill his daughter's boyfriend, a demon.
4. "Rolling Thunder" - Lady meets Trish after being hired by a priest to kill demons.
5. "In Private" - Dante is the heartthrob of a local waitress and a jealous man begins to spy on him, but gets in deeper than expected.
6. "Rock Queen" - A demon possesses a rock singer whose music causes chaos.
7. "Wishes Come True" - A genie-like demon grants peoples most malevolent, and unintentional, wishes.
8. "Once Upon A Time" - Dante is mistaken as a young man named Tony, and must save a town he and his mother supposedly died in.
9. "Death Poker" - Dante takes part in a poker challenge on a cruise ship to defeat a demon who murders the losers.
10. "The Last Promise" - A story of two demon brothers that mirror's Dante's love/hate relationship with Virgil.
11. "Showtime!" - Patty's mother surfaces with a magical amulet that seals away a great evil.
12. "Stylish!" - The power of Abigail is granted to Sid and it's Hell on earth.

LaughingMan's Devil May Cry Anime Review

Devil May Cry Anime in a nutshell:

Dante Strawberry Sundae
Dante eating strawberry sundaes.

That's it... The minute that running gag took hold, my entire perception of everything cool about Devil May Cry burned to ashes around me and blew away like dust in the wind. Dante, the half-demon, monster slaying, crazy-bitch pimping anti-hero of the series eats pretty pink strawberry sundaes like there's no tomorrow. Also, the fact that Dante and his friend, Morrison, are living out a gay fantasy involving adopting a little girl together just tops the cake and makes me question the underlying tones of the series.

Devil May Cry Anime Gay

But seriously:

I'm a huge fan of the Devil May Cry video games (minus the horribly neutered Devil May Cry 2). Just before Devil May Cry 4 was released, I was likely at the point where I would have had a child-like obsession with anything stamped with the Devil May Cry logo: If there was a cereal, I would buy it; if there were DMC t-shirts, I'd wear them; if there were condoms that read 'Force Edge' on the side, I would endorse them; and if there was a movie or show, I would watch it.

The latter of which actually came true. Surfing the net to feed my horribly obsessive compulsive nature, I stumbled across news that a Devil May Cry anime was in the works. Most of you know that I have a great deal of prejudice against anime; however, being a fan of the ultra violent and demonic series 'Hellsing', I was actually looking forward to a stylish, bad-ass show chalked to the brim with gore, language, and all sorts of nasty monsters.

My first impression of the Devil May Cry anime was overwhelmingly positive, based on the few trailers that had been leaked on sites like YouTube and others. Hell, just look at the opening sequence, it's incomprehensibly badass in every frame. From viewing montages of action clips, I knew that I would have to buy the DVDs, no questions asked. I expedited an order from Amazon.com (because publicly purchasing an anime would make me feel on par with a deviant publicly buying volumes of midget-clown porn), I cut out of work a little early and watched all of the episodes back-to-back the remainder of the night.

At about midnight, I felt violated and unclean, as though I had actually watched a string of twisted fetish videos that I had not been psychologically prepared to view.

I was sitting on my couch, pondering in a surreal cloud of thought over what I had seen and how starkly it contrasted my own expectations. The best comparison for my feelings is the equivalent of preparing to tear up carpet in a house because there are nice hardwood floors underneath: You pull up a corner and it looks good, so then you start slicing and dicing strips of carpet, and halfway through you see that the carpet was hiding deep scratches and water damage. The end result is so underwhelming in comparison to your early expectations that you can't help but be pissed by it.

Based on the characters present in the series and Dante's relaxed attitude, my best assumption is that the events of the Devil May Cry anime are happening between the events of Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 2 (and the events of Devil May Cry 3 happening before Devil May Cry 1, but that's a whole other timeline headache). Faithful to the games, Devil May Cry is about Dante, the son of the Dark Knight, Sparda, who owns a small business of being a demon slayer for hire. His shop - still named 'Devil May Cry' instead of 'Devil's Never Cry' like in the ending to the original game - is faithfully reproduced, down to the pool tables, the musical instruments, the jukebox, and even Dante's dingy desk and chair.

New to the Devil May Cry franchise is a character named Morrison, who acts like Dante's pimp: Morrison makes contact with prospective buyers, receives payment, and Dante does the dirty work. To be fair, I really enjoyed the character of Morrison: He was an older gent who is as laid back as Dante, and he sort of had a Film Noir aura about him. Also, his reason for existing in the Devil May Cry anime is a believable one: Morrison makes the business deals and establishes a client's credibility; both of which Dante are inept at because of his apparent detachment from anything that isn't a strawberry sundae. In fact, Morrison almost seems like a father-figure or a mentor to Dante, often being the only 'voice of reason' around a cast of bat-shit-insane adrenaline junkies.

In the first episode, Morrison introduces the character Patty, a little blonde-haired orphan girl. The girl is apparently the missing heir to a family fortune, and the deadline for her resurfacing is within a few days. Morrison tells Dante of a possible reward for bringing Patty to her family's mansion in time. Dante, believing that the mission will be a cakewalk, accepts. However, for some strange reason, all of Hell is bent on stopping Patty from reaching the mansion, and the two are attacked on trains, in theaters, and finally by either an heir becoming a demon, or a demon in disguise (I'm not exactly sure because the show wasn't that clear).

Devil May Cry Anime demon
"Fuck your soul, I want your inheritance!"

One thing that still bothers me is this: If you had the power to summon demons at your beck and call, why would you give two-shits about something as relatively worthless as money? Fuck, all the money in the world couldn't let you summon The Fucking Devil, so how does greed factor into the equation?

Meh, moving on...

It turns out that Patty isn't the heir, and that another 'Patty' used the orphan with the same name as bait to draw away the demons on order to inherit the fortune herself. After making really fucking short work of the main demon (a scene that literally only lasts a whole minute), Dante makes a speech to the adult Patty that she is even more evil and horrible than the demon, and that if she wasn't a human he would kill her in an instant (which I was crossing my fingers for). The little orphan Patty decides to stay with Dante and Morrison because she doesn't have a home, and Dante (Being the son of a devil, but still an all around nice guy) allows her to stay if she can pull her weight. Of course by 'pulling her weight' it means that she dresses like a maid on occasion and cleans up after Dante. Last time I checked, hanging around an underage girl dressed in a maid's outfit and having her clean around the clock was somewhat illegal.

Dante Patty Anime
You know how some people have a 'demon on their back'? Dante's is an obnoxious little brat named Patty.

Patty apparently has some major hang-ups about losing her mother; however by the end of the series her abandonment complex is finally resolved. Given Dante's own past, it's not hard to see why he let Patty hang out with him and Morrison. So, I expected Patty's role in the Devil May Cry anime to help flush out Dante's character, bringing to the surface more of Dante's inner demons and insecurities, giving the show and its characters some depth and opportunities to grow. Shit, maybe Patty could have been the reason why Dante's personality did a complete 180 between Devil May Cry 1 and Devil May Cry 2. If Dante had become a father-figure to Patty and the two had grown attached, and then if something awful would have happened to Patty involving the demons that Dante hunts, it would have left Dante as an introverted shell of a man, would have been an extremely powerful series and could have led into the story of the second game, where Dante has absolutely ZERO PERSONALITY.

Instead, Patty quickly became the obnoxious comic relief character and medium of the ridiculous Japanese sense of humor. The once quiet and sympathetic orphan quickly became Dante's personal thorn-in-the-ass who routinely decorates Dante's man-cave into a pink princess paradise of stuffed animals and other girlish frills. My only relief was that Dante did NOT think that the pink and plushies were an improvement, so Dante officially gets one of his "Man Cards" back.

Man Card

However, it is Patty's never-ending fussing and whining that made me apathetic to the character. Instead of developing other characters through her presence, Patty is always complaining about Dante being a pig and poor housekeeper. She bitches to Dante about getting a new dress, she bitches to Dante about his office being grim, and she bitches to Dante about him always eating pizza and strawberry sundaes (I see her point about the sundaes). It's not bad enough that she's nothing but a complainer, but Patty's voice in the english version of Devil May Cry is on par with the sound of ice skates on a chalkboard; a constant, high-pitched whine that will make you beg God to make you deaf. However, I'd imagine that reading Patty's complaints in closed-captioned wouldn't be any more enjoyable. Is she supposed to be someone's idea of a joke? Is this really what Devil May Cry needed, a little girl who never stops demeaning our anti-hero like some verbally abusive wife? Worse yet is the fact that she contributes NOTHING to the show, save for the first and last episodes. However, I am convinced that if Patty had never existed in the DMC universe, we probably would have gotten a better Devil May Cry anime, or at the very least the potential for a better storyline. Shit, if I were Dante I would have dropped Patty's ass back at the orphanage for not appreciating everything I did for her.

In a perfect world:

Patty: "Dante, can I have a new dress?"
Dante: "I don't have the money."
*She holds up a deck of cards, signifying that Dante made a bet with Patty over new clothes.*
Patty: "You promised!"
Dante: "How many new dresses did you get back at the orphanage?"
Patty: "None..."
Dante: "Your ass had better remember that. Now mop the floors again."

In other episodes, we see the femme fatales of the Devil May Cry universe, Lady and Trish, make their glorious reappearances much to the delight of fanboys. When I first saw the intro video of the series, my heart stopped and my jaw fell. There would be nothing cooler than Dante fighting along side both Lady and Trish in a story about the three overcoming the greatest of all evils in a massively action-packed and story-driven anime... and not the episodic hijinks we got in return. Instead, the two have been given bit parts; fanservice in a number of ways, though nothing as lewd as many would have preferred. Lady received the most attention of the two female leads, appearing in nearly half of the twelve episodes; however her part has been reduced to being Dante's loan shark, as she is always getting Dante to do dirty deeds done dirt cheap in exchange for some debt that he apparently owed her since Devil May Cry 3. Trish on the other hand only appears in three of the twelve episodes because she is out globe-trotting after she and Dante parted ways on relatively friendly terms. I guess there wasn't a nasty breakup?

Lady Trish Devil May Cry anime

The first time you see Trish is the episode 'Rolling Thunder' in which Lady mistakes Trish as being the episode's main antagonist and the two have some brief encounters, topped off with the two competing in a short territorial war after Trish becomes the big spender in Lady's favorite boutique. And then things get heavy as Trish and Lady taunt one another by shooting holes in the other's new clothing or butchering the other's hair. Seriously, this fight scene felt as though it was a catfight picked off the editing floor of the movie Zoolander. Japan isn't sexist, oh nooo...

Finally, we have to get to the character of Dante. Character development has never been a real highlight of the Devil May Cry series, but in the Devil May Cry anime it's non-fucking-existent. Dante's entire character can be summed up in the following:

  • Eats pizza, drinks beer, likes strawberry sundaes.
  • Kills demons for money.
  • Reads trashy magazines.
  • Gambles over everything and always loses.
  • Chronically in debt.

Sans the demon killing, Dante sounds like half of my fucking family! THAT IS NOT COOL!

The episode 'Once Upon a Time' that sheds some light on Dante's past had the opportunity to give Dante some much needed character development, but instead Dante spends the entire episode talking to others like he's talking to trees: completely detached and utterly emotionless. Even in episodes like 'Not Love' and 'The Last Promise', which mirror his own past through even more throw-away characters, Dante is distant and tries to keep relatively uninvolved with others. That is the major downfall of the series is that more attention is paid to the unique characters of each individual episode, and Dante is a walk-on hitman who quickly solves the problem with a gun or sword.

dante Devil May Cry

Then there's the action. You can't have something with Devil May Cry stamped on it, and NOT have massive amounts of action; however, putting the 'Devil May Cry' logo on a condom would make more sense than this anime. The majority of the episodes focus on individual storylines and throw-away characters, rather than focusing on Dante. Sure, there's action and buckets of blood and gore, but rarely do the fight scenes in each 25 minute episode ever last longer than a single minute. Normally, there are 2-3 fight scenes in each episode, though as I mentioned they rarely last longer than a minute, nor are they particularly memorable. Hell, even some of the climactic battles happen off-screen, as is the case with the fight between Dante, Lady, and Trish against the antagonist in the episode 'Rolling Thunder'. The three cock their weapons, the main demon lunges at them, and the screen fades to white, and then the three are standing outside of Dante's shop.

WHAT THE HELL?! I would have died happy (enough) to see Dante, Lady and Trish team up against a demon, even if it was for only a minute, but I was robbed of this, too?

And the 'full' fights are not much better... Here is the usual breakdown for any given fight in the Devil May Cry anime:

  1. A demon is about to kill a person.
  2. Dante tells demon to go back to Hell or he will kill him.
  3. Demon roars either "Die" or "I'll kill you."
  4. In less than 60 seconds, Dante,
    1. Cuts demon in half with sword.
    2. Shoots demon to death with bullets.
  5. Dante goes back to his office and is bitched at by Patty for being lazy and broke.

Devil May Cry Dante Anime

The storylines themselves are broken out into individual 'sitcom-like' episodes where each episode has relatively little connection between one another, except at the very end, at which point I no longer cared. Devil May Cry is basically a satanic anime of Seinfeld: It's a show about nothing where everything that happened comes flooding back at the very end like it was all supposed to make sense.

Satanic Anime Seinfeld
"What's up with that?"

In my personal opinion, had the Devil May Cry anime focused on a single story where Dante, Trish and Lady had to fight their way to some ultimate evil (just like the games) it would not have been half bad. In fact it would have been just as awesome as the opening sequence, but for a full 20-25 minutes. Instead we are submitted to watching multiple storylines involving outside characters, all with guest appearances by Dante, Trish, and Lady, who serve as the mop-up crew.

Dante Anime

The animation was good and pretty close to par with both Hellsing and Death Note (two of the four animes I can actually watch without being bombarded by sheer retardedness).

Even with a lot of the footage being of Dante's back, the opening sequence is badass, with guns blazing, swords slashing, demons, the Phantom boss from Devil May Cry 1, Trish, Lady, rain, blood, fire, and a pretty sweet guitar track. But the main show looks nothing like this. It's not nearly as detailed, nor is it anywhere close to the action it foretells. No, the opening sequence is the longest action scene in any given episode.

COCKTEASE!!

The ending to each episode always confused the fuck out of me. It shows a melancholy Dante, sitting alone in his establishment, drinking alcohol to a very sad song. With some shots of a ceiling fan slowly spinning under the amber light of either a sunset or a sunrise, and the ice in a scotch glass shifting therein, I always expected that the ending of the Devil May Cry anime would be a tragic one, which first led me to believe that Patty would have a more prominent role and that the outcome of Dante growing too attached would scar him. Though that is (unfortunately) not the case, the credit sequence remains haunting, but because of poor character development, I'll never know what the hell is haunting him.

A final note, the voice acting in the American version doesn't sound bad at all. Dante is voiced by the same guy who voiced Dante in Devil May Cry 4 and Devil May Cry 3 (I believe... need to check on that.) Trish and Lady sound nearly identical: the usual 'hot-and-I-know-it' voice, and both of them stumble quite a bit when, in the middle of a sentence, the lip animation pauses. But regardless, the ladies both have passable -if not pretty good- voice actors, though whether or not they are the same voices from the games seems unlikely. Morrison has a deep, commanding voice which suites his character, especially when he tells Dante that he HAS to take the job he's given. Like I said, Morrison is Dante's pimp, and that's why Morrison is cool. I already compared Patty's voice to ice skates against a chalkboard, so I'll leave it at that. The other voice actor I was surprised and probably most pleased with was the shambling reoccurring character Sid (the on and off antagonist of Devil May Cry, but whose appearances are so spotty that I just assumed he didn't exist until the last two episodes). Sid's voice could have been hammy with the usual creepy Peter Lorre voice, but instead his voice is calm and cool, but equally as creepy sounding, minus the camp value.

OVERALL

Trish Lady SexyTo sum it all up, there isn't much of anything that makes this series worth watching, unless you're either a die-hard Devil May Cry fangirl, and anime fan in general, or unless you are asked by someone to help you review it (sorry, ONOE). But even as big of a fan of Devil May Cry as I am, the anime never clicked with me. The action is over too quickly, the character development focuses on the single-episode characters instead of Dante and crew, the entire storyline adds nothing to the Devil May Cry mythos, the only new character that actually contributes anything is Morrison, and there's not even any Trish and Lady fanservice that would make this anime even worth renting for the perverts.

This anime leaves a bad taste in my mouth, and I'm going to purge it by watching Hellsing Ultimate or by playing Devil May Cry 3 or Devil May Cry 4.

... And no, Devil May Cry 2 is NOT better than this anime. At least the Devil May Cry anime has some familiarity with the other games.

I'm not sure exactly which review I like better! Onoe made a good weighted review and Laughing Man produced another smashing rant.

I actually liked the anime. Yeah the show doesn't have much on flushing out the characters but neither did the games really. The animation was pretty sweet in places but Laughingman is right about it not lasting nearly long enough. Even worse is that a lot of the monsters are just lumbering, giant, stupid beasts that act like Dante's pinatas. Even the episodes that try to have a deep story like the Little Mermaid episode are very shallow because its only a half hour long.

Morrison was okay but all he ever did was explain crap to Patty, and all Patty ever did was bitch and moan about absolutely everything Dante did for her. She's the most ungrateful Little Orphan Annie on earth. Lady and Trish only had cameos and cat fights, so nothing special there.

What the fuck is up with those faggy strawberry sundaes????

I guess Dante blowing away demons, that was pretty cool.

Hey… I kinda Know what you mean about it failing as a GREAT Anime, But at the end of the day – nearly EVERY anime based on a game isn’t very good, it’s just made to increase popularity of the series, in this case… apparently it didn’t.

However – I thought the anime was actually pretty enjoyable, The Music, By Rungran – I thought were all extremley well composed (wasn’t sure about the ending theme) – but they mainly suited the episodes and scenes.

PERSONALLY, i like the anime, it’s got quite a bit of emotion during the a few episodes, nice tension in a couple of them too. – Animation is GREAT, however, I feel some of the characters mouth’s are over-sized and too far down their faces. (In certain clips, in the first episode, this applied to Dante aswell, but his detail got progressivly better lol) =]

The plot is stand alone – nothing to do with the series otherwise it would create a dilema in having to refer to it in the games, it’s just a promo anime, like i said – it’s not like the DMC movie would be =]

Anyway, Sorry i wrote so much xD
Peace x

Hmm well i do agree that the anime lacked some depth but again i agree with the view that the animation was simply great, and the fighting scenes were nice although in my opinion too short. in episode 10 i cant really understand why the older brother is so eager to fight dante, something about not getting a chance to fight sparda, and then the younger brother whats his story? either way the scene where the younger dark haired brother charges at dante with tears in his eyes is, in my opinion, very intense and full of emotion.

Honestly, after reading your reviews I rented the DVDs from Hollywood Video and watched all the episodes and I was quite intrigued, the storyline was good, it didnt follow any of the games, thankfully. It was independent, away from the games, while keeping the characters’ main qualities at the forefront, for the most part anyways. I must admit, the strawberry sundae thing threw me off for a sec. Currently having and beaten 2 of the games, Devil may cry 1 and 4, i give the anime series a thumb and a half.

I think why DMC fell short was that it was a promo anime, which is sad in its own way. The story has lots of potential, but instead of making good on its promise of a kick-ass series, it just looked pretty. But I agree that the plot was stand-alone- it leaves room for another shot at a DMC anime in the future.

Nicely put together review, but frankly, translation from one medium to another
always results in this sort of thing. Animation studios are notorious for taking
a well-loved property and completely removing anything that was in the game that
made it compelling or interesting in the interest of making something completely
different or just so uninteresting that its barely recognizable. It's a bit of a
dick move, as you found out the hard way.

Still, impressively put together and organized review.

The prospect of seeing this is terrifying if I run out of things to review. I'm left speechless by how typically anime this series sounds, and how it destroys DMC. I'd be kinda pissed if something like this happened to, say, Army of Darkness.

I like the contrast between your writing styles. One is informative and the other is entertaining. I wont pic a fav though because I like both. I wanted to rent the anime but decided not to now because there are better anime out there than some promo piece with no prospect of a second season. I like long stories that actually make it to more than 12 episodes.

I am offended by this review. To me, Dante is the 2nd coolest anime character I know. All the other characters were annoying especially the females. So what if Dante likes strawberry sundaes, actually, I'm starting to want some right now, and who DOESN'T like strawberry sundaes (and pizza, you'd eat it for every meal if you could too). He was way cooler than I expected considering that he's a womanizer and that the first time seeing Dante was a boyxboy doujinshi between the twins (even then I like him. I haven't played it yet but I plan to. I prefer Dante in the anime rather than in the game(according to the screenshots); I wish the anime was longer. (I love everything about Dante, and accept every bad quality of him as well, but I doubt he has any except that his luck's pretty bad but so is mine)

@Cindy:
And I was offended by the Devil May Cry anime being a fast-money tie-in that skimped out on the action. I guess we're even?

now if dante was to be in a REAL relationship with trish that would be creepy seeing as to how she looks like his mother and pursuing a relationship with lady a girl who wears school uniform......
