Hellsing Ultimate OVA - Arbor Vitate by PIG (Raymond Watts)
I fucking love this song. I can't really say it any clearer: I LOVE THIS SONG!
It's rough, it's edgy, it's cryptic, it's insane, it's hard, it's dark, and it's twisted. The guitars and the beat make it one of the best songs when you're gaming against annoying pre-teens that rape your ears with high-pitched obscenities, or when you're working out and you need that extra boost of adrenaline. I'd say it would be an ideal song for a fist fight, but so few fights start near a jukebox. The abrupt contrasts of the brief instrumental interludes give the song a surreal sense, almost as if your ears were taking a trip on 'the spike and spoon' (which is apparently what this song is about: heroin abuse). The final piece of the song is the best: The growly, almost deamonic roars of "My God is good... my God is right..." again referencing heroin addiction.
Raymond Watts, the 'Lord of Lard', is the leader of the band 'PIG' and co-founder and on-and-off member of the band 'KMFDM'. He has toured Europe, North America, and has enjoyed success in Japan along side the Japanese band 'Buck Tick'. I was (and still am) an avid fan of Raymond Watts through my college years, as I found his music varying between hauntingly melancholy to absolute chaos. His lyrics I have also found to be poetically metaphoric and vividly abstract on occasion, and any further reference to his moments of amazing songwriting can be found in the lyrics of "Juke Joint Jezebel", "F.O.M." and "Arbor Vitate".
As for the video:
Hellsing is one of the very few Japanese animes that I can stomach... wait, no: I can not only stomach it, but I actually really enjoy this show. Maybe I just have a really bad impression from all the inane, big-eyed, blue-haired crap my college friends used to watch, but Hellsing has always been extremely bad ass. The premise is insane: Vampires, werewolves, psychotic Catholic priests, armies of the undead, secret militaries, mercenaries, and Nazis... oh my. Seriously, the entire thing sounds like a grind house 'C-movie', but it is pulled off amazingly well. The art direction for the 'Hellsing: Ultimate' series is amazing (the level of detail even beats pre-CGI Disney when it was at its animation prime), the voice acting is top-notch, and the story and character development is well above par against some of the recent 'summer blockbusters' that Hollywood has been shitting on us for the last few years.
The idea of making a music video with the two kind of just sprang on me when I was listening to the song Arbor Vitate and watching Hellsing at the same time (I'm an ADHD child). It was pretty shocking that the two overlapped amazingly well, minus a few interludes in the song.
Anyways, the whole video is taken from Volume I of the Hellsing: Ultimate series, with the main character facing off against the psychotic paladin Alexander Anderson. Great fight, really gory and brutal, is animated very well, and doesn't over-do the over-the-top action sequences like every movie and TV show did after the release of 'The Matrix'. (For further reference on really, REALLY bad Matrix-like action sequences, watch 'House of the Dead' by Uwe Boll.)
