JK Rowling’s Fantastic Tweets and How to Mock Them: Harry Potter Retconning

For JK Rowling’s retconning -changing the literary continuity- of her Harry Potter is nothing new. Dumbledore was suggested as being gay three months after the final book came out. Was it a fact that was apparently hidden for 7 books? Or was it a quick way to drum up debate and boost book sales?

However, her attempts to remain relevant by incorporating more diversity into her popular fantasy book series is beginning to backfire. Not only is she seen by some as being disrespectful to her literary universe, but recently to score social justice points she suggested that Nagini, Voldemort’s pet snake, is an Asian woman. Some suggest that treating representation as a revisionism afterthought to virtue signal how ‘woke’ she is, is not genuine representation. Others say that Rowling saying that ‘Naga are snake-like mythical creatures of Indonesian mythology’ is inherently wrong, as it’s actually Indian.

Finally, others suggest that the retconning casts Nagini as being in an abusive relationship with a male patriarch. Additionally, she’s suggested that Hermoine could be black, despite Emma Watson’s portrayal of Hermoine in the films. Now people on different sides of the political spectrum are seeing her desperate attempts to score diversity points for what they are.
